Fall Program Schedule Update

The past two years have ushered in a new era for OLLI-UO. Zoom allowed for OLLI connections to flourish across the state and country (and even spanning the globe!) like never before: members received access to more classes and lectures than ever, our pool of instructors and presenters increased exponentially, friendships blossomed, and staff collaborations were fruitful.

Our phased return to bringing back in-person class options, launched this past spring and continuing through the summer and into the coming fall term, signals yet another transition for OLLI-UO. In the upcoming academic terms, we aim to offer as many programs as we can in a “hybrid” format—that is, having the option to attend in-person at designated locations or on Zoom.

To accomplish this, we program managers have worked with committee leaders, course managers, and study/discussion group facilitators in both Central Oregon and Eugene/Springfield to coordinate and balance the overall OLLI-UO program calendar. Our three main goals have been to:

  • Schedule hybrid classes to match facility rental in Bend (availability has changed)
  • Spread out popular offerings (like science and history) to different days of the week
  • Create new possibilities for scheduling one-time guest lectures (in the Zoom era, our presenters now come to us from many different time zones!)

Staff and member-leaders agreed upon the following changes, to begin Fall term—on Monday, September 12:

  • The popular weekly history course offering (starting with The Mongol Empire Strikes Back) will move to Thursday mornings, 10:00 a.m.–noon.
  • Understanding Science will return to its traditional 1st, 3rd, and 5th Tuesday morning time slot, 10:00 a.m.–noon.
  • News and Views will move one day earlier to 2nd and 4th Wednesday mornings, remaining at its 9:30–11:30 a.m. time.
  • Solutions will move to 2nd and 4th Monday mornings from 9:30–11:30 a.m.

Please review the updated Program Catalog and Program Calendar. We invite you to make plans now to attend your favorite—and perhaps a new—OLLI-UO offering this fall.

Thank you for your participation in OLLI-UO! We look forward to seeing you in-person and/or on Zoom soon!

Start a SIG!

Interested in getting out and joining an activity with other OLLI members and meeting new friends? One way to do this is by forming or joining a Shared Interest Group (SIG).

SIGs are independent and self-directed groups, with members deciding where and when to meet and how the group functions. SIGs provide opportunities to form new friendships and to join in activities with other OLLI members with mutual interests.

Are you interested in:

  • A walking group that explores members' neighborhoods throughout Eugene/Springfield?
  • Or a group that gets together for lunch?
  • Or a group that goes to movies or plays Scrabble together?
  • Or a hiking group?
  • Or maybe you’d like to join an existing SIG?

These are just some ideas for you to think about. What Shared Interest Groups do you think should be formed? Are you willing to organize a SIG? (It’s easy! All you need is four members, including one facilitator.) OLLI-UO staff and member leaders will help you with the process to form a SIG and to help spread the word. Propose your SIG through a short online form.
